<\/div><\/div>Reinaldo Herrera, the nephew of famed designer Carolina Herrera<\/div><\/a><\/figure><\/div><\/div><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\nThe murder of both men, partners in an architecture firm,<\/A> received huge attention in national and international \r\npress. One of the victims of the murder-kidnapping, Reinaldo Herrera, was family \r\nof the famous Venezuelan fashion designer Carolina Herrera. But, despite the \r\npopularity of Herrera, the investigators were clear from the beginning that the \r\nreal target of the attack was Fabrizio Mendoza.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
An \r\nanonymous report that circulated on Twitter on the day of the crime already \r\nalerted the investigators about his alleged connection with Miami-based \r\nVenezuelan businessman Salvador Lairet, a former partner and friend of Mendoza. \r\nThe same rumor also spread immediately among the acquaintances of both \r\nentrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n
PAY IT FORWARD<\/h2>\n\n\n
Not \r\nalways -hardly ever, in fact- the first hypothesis is the most accurate. But in \r\norder to corroborate this case, the key was the arrest of Franco Jose Tessarolo \r\nSalcedo, 34, who was one of the best friends of Mendoza Isea, very close to his \r\nfamily, and also to that of Reinaldo Herrera. He assisted them in the repair and \r\nmaintenance of vehicles in a mechanic workshop that he had in the so-called \r\nAltos Mirandinos, a series of settlements that make up a middle-class commuter \r\ntown on the outskirts of Caracas, in the state of Miranda. Because of this \r\ncloseness, no one thought it strange to find Tessarolo at Mendoza's funeral, \r\nheld in the East Cemetery of La Guairita, and even see him flank the \r\ncoffin.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
Tessarolo \r\nwas also a friend of Salvador Lairet, with whom he maintained permanent contact. \r\nThey all belonged to the same circle of young entrepreneurs and merchants. But \r\nthere was an additional bond that was unadverted by many until that moment: \r\nLairet, who according to police versions, would have delegated Mendoza's murder \r\nto Tessarolo.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
Ultimately \r\nFranco Tessarolo would have revealed to the investigators that Lairet made a \r\nphone call to task him with the planning of Mendoza Isea's murder and offered to \r\npay 15,000 dollars for the job. Tessarolo got going immediately and made contact \r\nwith his friend Suhe Gonz\u00e1lez \u00c1lvarez, 35 years old, an informal merchant from \r\nLos Teques, capital city of the state of Miranda, 30 minutes from Caracas and \r\neven closer to Los Altos. He provided him with 10,000 dollars for him to find \r\nthe people he needed to get the criminal job done.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
Gonz\u00e1lez \r\n\u00c1lvarez, in turn, contacted a trusted man: Edwin Jesus Montilla, 34, and told \r\nhim that he needed to arrange a group for the task. Montilla hired two more men \r\nwho would handle the execution of the crime: a criminal who was arrested for \r\nkidnapping in 2015 and another one who allegedly had escaped from prison. The \r\nplanning of the murder took them one month.<\/p>\n\n

It was easy to locate him. \r\nTessarolo provided information on where to find him. Shortly after noon, the two \r\nhitmen, along with Edwin Jesus Montilla, intercepted Mendoza in the parking lot \r\nof the Service Center Plaza La Boyera, in the municipality of El \r\nHatillo.<\/p>\n\n\n
Surprised by this, the criminals decided to also take Herrera in order to leave no witnesses<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n
<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
Mendoza, \r\nwho was the target, was subdued. But the task force had to improvise. The target \r\nwas in company of Reinaldo Herrera. Surprised by this, the criminals decided to \r\nalso take him in order to leave no witnesses. They were forced to board the \r\nHilux SUV property of Mendoza, where they got away from the \r\nplace.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
One \r\nof the criminals took the driver's seat, while the other threatened the victims \r\nwith a gun. Behind the vehicle, Montilla followed them on a motorcycle. His job \r\nwas practically just to supervise: to make sure that the two hitmen carried out \r\nthe job they were hired for.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
As \r\nthey traveled from La Boyera to La Trinidad, in the municipality of Baruta, on \r\nthe way to Caracas west-center, the criminals driving the SUV decided to take a \r\ndetour to Mendoza's home in the Escampadero residential complex in La Tahona, a \r\nmid-class residential estate. If it had been only a distracting action, they \r\nwould have been successful: that stopover was what led the families of the \r\nvictims to believe that it was a kidnapping. But the truth is that they sought \r\nto get more money to round their fees, because Gonz\u00e1lez \u00c1lvarez, the contractor \r\nof the job, ended up handing out just 7,000 of the $10,000 promised to them, and \r\nTessarolo had already kept 5,000 of the $15,000 offered at the beginning of the \r\ncommission.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
While \r\nentering the complex, they managed to pass two security checkpoints but the \r\nsecurity cameras recorded them. The faces of Edwin Jes\u00fas Montilla and the \r\nexecutioners were caught in camera. One of the guards deemed suspicious the \r\npresence of a motorcycle behind the vehicle. He knew Mendoza had no escorts. He \r\napproached the parking lot to ask Mendoza if everything was fine. \"He told the \r\nwatchman that those people were with him and that there was no problem. After \r\nthat he called the maid who was cleaning in his apartment to get him some very \r\nexpensive wrist watches, some dollars and around 200 euros that were next to his \r\npassport\", witnesses said. The value of the booty tripled the amount that the \r\nthree men received for murdering Mendoza and Herrera.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
When \r\nthey left the place, they headed without any more detours to the Caracas-La \r\nGuaira old road, specifically to the El Topo sector, a zone where in recent \r\nmonths at least three corpses of victims of revenge and alleged kidnappings have \r\nbeen located. There the criminals killed the two businessmen, whose bodies were \r\nleft inside the vehicle of Mendoza, and fled.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
On \r\nJune 20th, Commissioner Einar Giuliani, security director of the municipality of \r\nEl Hatillo, reported that Edwin Jes\u00fas Montilla, Suhe Gonz\u00e1lez \u00c1lvarez and Franco \r\nJos\u00e9 Tessarolo, had been arrested in Los Teques and El Hatillo in the first days \r\nof June by officials of the Anti-Extortion and Kidnapping Division of CICPC. \r\nThey confessed their participation in the murder of Mendoza and Herrera \r\nand were \r\ncharged for aggravated kidnapping<\/A>, \r\nvehicle theft, murder by hire and criminal association, says a bulletin from the \r\nPublic Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
Two \r\nof them were sent to El Rodeo II - a prison near Guatire, in the state of \r\nMiranda, east of Caracas -, while Tessarolo remained in the cells of the \r\nAnti-Extortion and Kidnapping Division of CICPC. The two perpetrators of the \r\ncrime along \r\nwith the presumed intellectual author, who is in the United \r\nStates<\/A>, \r\nare still to be captured, said Giuliani.<\/p>\n\n

Fabrizio \r\nAlberto Mendoza Isea was 31 years old, single and although he was not known to \r\nhave a formal couple, he was eventually seen in the company of beautiful women. \r\nHe moved deftly in the business world and traveled to Miami, where he had \r\nacquired various properties, imported luxury vehicles, and was buying and \r\nselling dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n

It \r\nwasn\u2019t always like this. Just five years ago, he was trying to find his niche in \r\nthe labour world and attended interviews with a major transnational corporation \r\nof mass consumption. The fact that he was rejected in that opportunity did not \r\nmean a frustration or a failure to Mendoza. On the contrary: it seems to have \r\nserved as a gateway to a new dimension of possibilities. Almost immediately, the \r\nyoung man began to gain a striking economic prosperity. \"I was surprised to see \r\nhim having cars, apartments and traveling all the time\", reported a person that \r\nknew him before his boom period.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
Mendoza \r\ncame from a family of scholars from the state of Trujillo, in the southwestern \r\nAndes of Venezuela. His grandmother, Lourdes Dubuc de Isea, was the official \r\nchronicler of Bocon\u00f3, a city famous in the area for its cultural activity, and \r\nwas a recognized teacher of the region. However, the family had no wealth of \r\nfortune.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
In \r\nCaracas, Mendoza lived in an apartment he had bought less than two years ago in \r\none of the buildings of the estate Escampadero, in La Tahona. Although the house \r\nwas registered in his mother's name, Mar\u00eda Magdalena Isea, it was the place \r\nwhere the young man used to stay when he was in Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
He \r\nonce had a conflict with his neighbors. Mendoza could not find a better place to \r\nstore a flotilla of 12 white Nissan vans that he had gotten from abroad, than \r\nthe common areas of the building. He justified himself by saying that he had had \r\nproblems with the transfer of the vehicles to the institution that had \r\ncommissioned them and that soon he would solve the \r\ninconvenience.<\/p>\n\n\n

He \r\nalso offered his neighbors to get luxury vehicles, latest model, in less than a \r\nweek. \"I wanted to buy a car for my wife, I asked him and he said: 'Tell me \r\nwhich car do you want? I'll get you the car you want for tomorrow\", said one of \r\nthe residents of the estate, who thought it strange that someone offered to get \r\ncars from one day to another, in a country where even the daily act of buying \r\nbread requires hours of waiting in a line.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
But \r\nthese details did not affect his image of a quiet man who barely let himself be \r\nseen during his sojourn in the place. The day after the murder, Maria Magdalena \r\nIsea, mother of Mendoza, went to the apartment, which is in her name, with a \r\nblacksmith and changed the door lock.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
Mendoza \r\nIsea owned several apartments in the Epic Condo Residences in Miami, located on \r\nthe US1 or Biscayne Boulevard. Two of these homes - valued between $ 400,000 and \r\n$ 3 million - are registered in the name of the companies Aiko 3809, LLC and \r\nAiko 3810, LLC, which were opened by the entrepreneur in \r\nMiami.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
In \r\naddition, Fabrizio Mendoza appears as president of the company Inversiones \r\nHollister S.A., registered in Panama in 2007, along with Erick Eduardo Monta\u00f1o \r\nSu\u00e1rez, who appears as director. The company is still active according to the \r\nPublic Registry of Panama.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
Monta\u00f1o \r\nSu\u00e1rez also appears as a partner of Salvador Lairet in the company Dekomundo \r\nCorp, created in Florida in 2011. This organization remains inactive according \r\nto the Florida Public Register.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
In \r\nVenezuela, Mendoza was a partner in the architecture firm Akua Proyectos, CA, \r\nowned by Reinaldo Herrera, a 34-year-old married and two-child architect who was \r\ndedicated to remodelling luxury houses.<\/p>\n\n

A \r\nfew days before being killed, Mendoza Isea went to Miami, where he met some \r\nfriends with whom he used to hang out and have fun in nightclubs. But on that \r\nvisit to Miami, which would be his last, the businessman avoided nights out. His \r\nreason? He did not want to meet his old partner, Salvador \r\nLairet.<\/p>\n\n\n

In \r\nMay 2016, the opposition deputy to the National Assembly, Robert Alcal\u00e1, \r\ndenounced before the National Assembly's Controller's Committee a group of young \r\nentrepreneurs under suspicion of being involved in corruption crimes for more \r\nthan 800 million dollars, through the allocation of foreign currency by the \r\nextinct Commission on Foreign Currency Administration (Cadivi), the entity \r\ncreated in 2003 by Hugo Chavez to regulate the strict and convoluted currency \r\nexchange control system.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
One \r\nof the companies among those denounced by Alcal\u00e1 was Gerkat Corporation \"created \r\nand registered in Peru by Salvador Lairet, Fabrizio Mendoza and \u00c1lvaro Pulido, \r\nnephew of Piedad C\u00f3rdoba, for chemicals imports. In March 2012, this company \r\nrequested Cadivi 445 thousand dollars for the purchase of a coffee mill, when \r\nits real price was 135 thousand dollars, which means a surplus of 310 thousand \r\ndollars. The worst thing is that the same request was introduced ten times. \r\nThese dollars exchanged at a 4.30 Bs\/$ rate were resold by the Gerkat \r\nCorporation owners, who used the company as a facade for their illicit \r\nactivities\", reviewed the Cuentas Claras portal<\/A> on the documents presented by the \r\nparliamentarian.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
Also \r\naccording to the same website, as mentioned by the deputy, among those related \r\nto Mendoza Isea was Alex Saab, \"representative of the Colombian company Fondo \r\nGlobal de Construcci\u00f3n, which obtained several contracts with the government of \r\nHugo Ch\u00e1vez in the past\".<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
\u00c1lvaro \r\nPulido Vargas and Alex Saab are \r\ntwo businessmen<\/A> from \r\nthe Colombian Atlantic coast. Indeed, they are directors of Fondo Global de \r\nConstrucci\u00f3n<\/A>, a company closely linked to \r\nthe governor of the state of Vargas, Jorge Garc\u00eda Carneiro, and accused by the \r\nEcuadorian prosecutor's office as part of a fraudulent scheme to obtain \r\npreferential dollars in Venezuela under the pretense of exporting from that \r\ncountry. They are also important \r\nsuppliers of the Local Committees of Supply and Production \r\n(Clap)<\/A>, \r\nthe formula patented by the Government of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro to control the \r\ndistribution of food and essential goods in popular zones. In Caracas, the \r\nrepresentation of its commercial emporium occupies a whole floor of the Centro \r\nGalip\u00e1n, in the Francisco de Miranda avenue. It is known that Pulido Vargas, \r\nwhose relationship with former congressman and presidential candidate, Piedad \r\nC\u00f3rdoba hasn't been proved, doesn't use his real name; and that Saab, who does \r\nrecognize having a friendly relationship with politics, has been investigated by \r\nUS authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n
In most cases the products for which they requested the dollars were not even related to the corporate name of the companies<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n
In \r\nthe list of deputy Alcal\u00e1 also appear four other companies attributed to the \r\ngroup of young entrepreneurs: Mexbin SA (Ecuador), Chenys Exportaciones EIRL \r\n(Peru), Corporaci\u00f3n 1 TO 1 S.R.L (Peru) and Radio Communications Telocaliza1 \r\nC.A., which carried out transactions for 4.6 million dollars for the alleged \r\nimportation of sodium sulfate to a company incorporated in Ecuador and related \r\nto Mendoza, Lairet, Pulido and Alejandro Berrizbeitia. This same group carried \r\nout similar operations with the company Gones Indonesia C.A., which received \r\nmore than $8.8 millions from Cadivi.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
The \r\nbusiness consisted in the creation of fake companies in different regions of \r\nVenezuela (Aragua, Amazonas, Lara, among other states), which requested \r\npreferential dollars for chemicals imports from companies also constituted or \r\nrelated to the same group of entrepreneurs in Ecuador and Peru, mainly. In most \r\ncases the products for which they requested the dollars were not even related to \r\nthe corporate name of the companies. The dollars they received at 4.30 bolivars \r\n- the cheapest official exchange rate in the system - were traded on the black \r\nmarket at more than 20 bolivars or simply went straight to the requesters' \r\nindividual accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n
These gentlemen have no way of justifying the fortune, the billions of dollars they have\"<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n
\"According \r\nto the allegations, Lairet is directly or indirectly related to 11 companies - \r\nsix nationals (in Amazonas, Aragua, Lara, Monagas and Capital District) and five \r\nforeign ones (three in Peru and two in Ecuador) - involved in requests for \r\napproximately $13.9 millions to import chemicals. Among them, sodium sulfate, \r\ntitanium dioxide, cetostearyl alcohol and sodium benzoate, a food additive; \r\nproducts not associated with the name of each company\" claimed a note of the \r\nportal El \r\nPitazo.<\/A><\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
The \r\nparliamentarian Robert Alcal\u00e1 also referred to the life of luxuries and \r\nostentation that this group of young investors boased abroad. \"These gentlemen \r\nhave no way of justifying the fortune, the billions of dollars they have, the \r\namount of money they spend in the world and the life they live\" he said, with a \r\nspecial mention for Lairet.<\/p>\n\n

In 2013, a similar conflict resulted \r\nin the murder of Sergio Andr\u00e9s Schael Medina<\/A>, \r\n33 years old. He traveled from Florida to Panama to collect a debt of $40,000, \r\nafter an exchange transaction through Cadivi, and appeared dead after a meeting \r\nwith two Venezuelan businessmen.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
Acquaintances \r\nof this group of young entrepreneurs, affirm that the Mendoza case would be \r\nrelated to the deaths in strange circumstances of two Venezuelans in Miami, who \r\nwere linked to organizations of this type.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n
