{"id":2460,"date":"2016-10-23T16:21:37","date_gmt":"2016-10-23T16:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/armando.info\/?p=2460"},"modified":"2016-10-23T16:21:37","modified_gmt":"2016-10-23T16:21:37","slug":"the-venezuelans-who-disappeared-in-the-colombian-jungle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/armando.info\/en\/the-venezuelans-who-disappeared-in-the-colombian-jungle\/","title":{"rendered":"The Venezuelans who disappeared in the Colombian Jungle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Barinas.- \r\nMost kidnapped by FARC in Venezuela lived in Barinas, the home state of the \r\nleader of the self-styled Bolivarian revolution, Hugo \r\nCh\u00e1vez.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \r\nthat province of the western plains the disappearances of young people without \r\napparent reason increased in 2009. In that year, it was learned of the abduction \r\nof two infants. The small Ben Jing Shoung Cano, of three years of age, son of \r\nthe well-known merchant of Chinese origin Leo Shoung \u2014rescued safe and sound \r\nafter remaining several days in the power of a group of Colombian and Venezuelan \r\nbandits\u2014 was perhaps the most relevant because it generated a 24-hour protest, \r\nwhich included the closure of stores run by Chinese and Arabs, who usually turn \r\ntheir backs on this kind of demonstrations when they are called by political \r\nparties.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It \r\nwas a milestone in the recent history of the region. Dozens of people stood with \r\nbanners in the well-known traffic circle of Cada (the old supermarket already \r\ndisappeared) to demand the release of the minors. Suddenly, the community was \r\naware of what was happening. Many young people disappeared and no one ever heard \r\nfrom them again. Week after week, people learnt about new cases. News came about \r\ndead youngsters. It was the same pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/armando.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/23102016-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52412\"\/><figcaption>Oscar Pineda, head of the NGO Peace and Life Committee for Human Rights<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \r\nnews was so recurrent that it stopped having an impact for some, but not for \r\nOscar Pineda, a retiree who was then 60 years old. Over the months, Pineda would \r\nbe put in charge of an NGO called Peace and Life Committee for Human Rights. He \r\nsensed something in the environment. Some would call him crazy when they saw him \r\nwith his brown briefcase full of newspaper clippings and the list of each \r\ndisappearance reported in the media of the region.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pineda \r\nfound that the disappearances could not only be attributed to the action of the \r\nmafia construction trade unions or to individuals who acted outside the law \r\ntaking advantage of their links with the local government. Many of those \r\ndisappeared ended up in the ranks of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia \r\n(FARC), who then found in the spillway of Venezuela the tranquility they did not \r\nhave in their country. With the help of the United States of America, the \r\ngovernment of President \u00c1lvaro Uribe V\u00e9lez (2002-2010) began an all-out war \r\nagainst the guerrillas that decimated its troops and reduced its area of \r\n??influence.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \r\n2015, Pineda, always with his brown briefcase, even wanted to raise the case of \r\nthe disappeared in Barinas to the Colombian ex-senator Piedad C\u00f3rdova. On March \r\n23 of that year, the leader of Movimiento Poder Ciudadano Siglo XXI, the one \r\nwith the permanent turban, known for her close friendship with Hugo Ch\u00e1vez, was \r\non the same plane that Pineda would board that afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There \r\nshe was surrounded by glances on the way to her seat. Pineda recognized her \r\nimmediately. Trying to get close to Piedad C\u00f3rdova seemed easy until escorts \r\nwent through. \"What do you want?\" They asked him. \"I want to talk to the Senator \r\nabout the cases of kidnappings in Barinas.\" When she heard, C\u00f3rdova said, \"Let\u2019s \r\ntalk in Caracas.\" She never received him.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A picture\u2026 The picture!<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe \r\nPineda would have shown her the photo that circulated in the newspaper De Frente \r\n(pro-government and currently out of circulation), in Barinas. It was fate that \r\ninformation about FARC was illustrated with an image of the AFP agency file, and \r\nthat the editor at that time chose the picture. There was the lost son of a \r\nhumble woman.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignleft\"><blockquote><p>\"We saw the picture on the newspaper and my son appeared in a military suit.\"<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wilfredo \r\nValero D\u00edaz was kidnapped on April 6, 2009, at age 19. It was a Monday, at 12:36 \r\nPM, when the young man was in a hairdresser near his home. Four armed men \r\ndescended from a truck to take him by force. Nobody could do \r\nanything.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"We \r\nsaw the picture on the newspaper and my son appeared in a military suit. I went \r\nto the Police Headquarter and spoke with Commander Cacioppo, with Governor Ad\u00e1n \r\nCh\u00e1vez, with Mayor Abundio S\u00e1nchez. I delivered a letter to President Ch\u00e1vez in \r\nhis hands and to date, I never had an answer about my son,\" recalls \r\nZaida.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This \r\nwoman received a call from a stranger telling her not to lose hope of seeing her \r\nson. She recalls that she paid Bs. 40 million (Bs. 40,000 after the monetary \r\nredenomination) for the rescue.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven \r\nyears have passed, though the sadness remains the same. The story of her drama \r\nis moving. A few months after the disappearance of her son, depression attacked \r\nher to the point of completely losing her hair. She endured the peeling of the \r\nskin and not being able to sleep. \"It was two years without being able to work. \r\nAs long as I do not see him dead, to me he is alive.\"<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \r\nlong-awaited peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC \r\nguerrillas is also a relief for many Venezuelan families. \"I am calling on \r\nPresident Santos to please have peace, so we can have our relatives back. In \r\n2009, it was not only my son. Many other mothers also experienced the pain of \r\nthe disappearance of their sons. I also ask President Maduro to help us. There \r\nwere many missing here and none of us have an answer.\"<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \r\nday after that famous picture, several radio programs mentioned this news, which \r\nremoved the entrails of a city. Oscar Pineda approached the broadcaster in the \r\nstate at that time, Radio Sensacional 94.7 FM (the National Telecommunications \r\nCommission would suspend it in August 2014) and offered details of what was \r\nhappening in Barinas.<\/p>\n\n\n\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\t\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"C\u00f3mite Paz y Vida denuncia desaparici\u00f3n de personas en el estado Barinas\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UOjtIzqw6fs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t \n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But \r\nWilfredo Valero was not the only one. Many cases were reported, the list grew \r\nevery week and also the suspicions that some disappeared could be in the hands \r\nof the Colombian guerrillas. <\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shoes \r\nas proof of life. Alfonso Alejandro Brice\u00f1o Pi\u00f1a was kidnapped on January 29, \r\n2010. <BR style=\"mso-special-character: line-break\"><BR \r\nstyle=\"mso-special-character: line-break\"><\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He \r\nwas then 20 years old and was in the third semester of Tax Administration. He is \r\nthe eldest son of Rosa Gisela Pi\u00f1a. She has had to cope with widowhood in the \r\nabsence of Alfonso, her pillar.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"They \r\ntold us to look for him by ourselves, to call the auto repair shop to declare, \r\nbut we have not heard anything,\" she recalled. Alfonso was taken from an auto \r\nbody shop very close to the Barinas Airport. Four men threatened him with a gun \r\nin front of the owner of the repair shop. That afternoon, he coincided in the \r\nbusiness with an official from the Venezuelan Investigative and Criminal Police \r\nCorps (CICPC), who was having his car repaired.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alfonso, \r\nvery fond of showing off his little \"<I>chimonera<\/I>\", where <I>chim\u00f3<\/I> is \r\nprepared, a tobacco-based product, commonly used in the Andean and states and \r\nthe plains) did not seem to be a potential victim of kidnapping. \"Maybe they \r\nthought we had money,\" speculates \r\nRosa.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignleft\"><blockquote><p>They described how she was dressed. They left Alfonzo's shoes at the entrance of the house.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three \r\ndays after, they began receiving calls daily. They described how she was \r\ndressed. They left Alfonzo's shoes at the entrance of the house. They had \r\npasswords of a debit card and they knew the day of their son's high school \r\ngraduation.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That \r\nHoly Week, she gave 300 thousand bolivars, but \"Alfonsito\" did not appear. \"They \r\ntold me to leave, they asked me to go around and around via Barrancas, near La \r\nYuca river, and to throw the money from the bridge over the highway to San Jos\u00e9 \r\nObrero.\"<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seven \r\nmonths later, she received a call at 10:00 PM. \"Mother, mother!\" a voice said on \r\nthe other side of the phone. Only Alfonso used to call her like that. The number \r\nshowed the area code of the state of Delta Amacuro (easternmost province of \r\nVenezuela). Then, Rosa found out that the phone belonged to an inmate and had \r\npassed through several hands before she heard her son's \r\nvoice.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sold to FARC<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On \r\nJune 9, 2009, occurred the kidnapping of Luis Jos\u00e9 Barrios Silva, aged 19. The \r\ncase was reported by his mother Livia Silva before the NGO, Peace and Life \r\nCommittee for Human Rights. The incident occurred on a well-known avenue in the \r\nMunicipality of Barinas, as in the case of Wilfredo, in front of the city's \r\nairport. That day, he was with his friend Adri\u00e1n Arturo Moreno Rodr\u00edguez, of the \r\nsame age.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently, \r\nthey had been arrested by motorized National Guard, who asked for their IDs. \r\nThen, <BR>\u2014according to Livia's story\u2014 the officials called by phone. After a \r\nwhile, two SUVs appeared. Around six people dressed in civilian clothes came out \r\nand talked to the youngsters. Adri\u00e1n was forced into one of the vehicles and \r\nLuis was taken on the back of a motorcycle. The only witness who was at work \r\nthat afternoon witnessed when they were taken away. \"We do not know if they were \r\nactual officials or not.\"<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This \r\nhappened on a Tuesday. \"On Friday,\" says Livia, \"they called me at 5:00 PM. A \r\nman with Colombian accent told me that if I wanted to know about my son, we had \r\nto meet; that they had been taken by a lieutenant and four other officials. He \r\nwas in a farm in San Silvestre. I had to pay,\" explains this woman, recalling \r\nthat day when everything changed for her.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She \r\ncould not communicate with that man never again, and she lost the only trace. A \r\nperson of her trust went to Arauca, state of Apure (border with Colombia), and \r\nwas informed that the young man had been sold to an irregular \r\ngroup.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"520\" height=\"340\" src=\"https:\/\/armando.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/23102016-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52413\"\/><figcaption>Press conference where Oscar Pineda and other members of the NGO filed complaints with the National Assembly on June 15, 2011<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Days \r\nafter, she received another call with a T\u00e1chira state code and was informed that \r\nher son was going to be sold to FARC because she had not \r\npaid.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Livia \r\ntalks about her visions. As a Christian woman, she has asked for revelations, \r\nsome indication. \"I watched a helicopter when they threw those boys in a \r\nmountainous area where there was a refrigerated truck. They put them in \r\nthere.\"<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After \r\nthe publication of Wilfredo Valero\u2019s picture, they tried to communicate with \r\n\"Voces del Secuestro \" (Voices of Kidnapping), the very tuned program of Herbin \r\nHoyos that the captives listen to in the Colombian jungle. \"Months after the \r\nevents, I sent messages to my son, to FARC and to Noticiero de Colombia.\" To \r\nthis day, neither the Venezuelan judicial police nor the Anti-Extortion and \r\nKidnapping Group (GAES) have given her any news about his \r\nwhereabouts.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Bracelet<\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Miletza \r\nSosa, sister of Rodolfo Antonio Mel\u00e9ndez Sosa, who disappeared when he was 32 \r\nyears old, on September 20, 2008, who has assumed the search from the beginning. \r\nHer messages on the social media Facebook are always a reminder of the years \r\nthat go by, of the birthdays and absences of Rodolfo.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On \r\nthe day of his abduction, they went to a farm thy own when they were intercepted \r\nby some officials, presumably from the Cicpc (criminal investigation police), \r\nwho where in a mobile check point. Rodolfo, an uncle and his wife, his brother's \r\ngirlfriend and four girls were in the car. The women were released at 11 PM and \r\nthe uncle, two days later. They were all taken to a house. One of the \r\nindividuals had a bracelet on one of his arms with the acronym of Front 10, \r\nwhich contained a rifle with a cross-flag.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"I \r\nrequested a certificate of life and they never gave it to \r\nme.\"<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \r\nmen were kept for two days on a farm in San Silvestre, municipality of Barinas. \r\nThen, they were taken out of the country through the state of Apure. Only \r\nRodolfo remains in the hands of that group. But when they were in San Silvestre, \r\nthe uncle could observe the place where they were when he had a chance to remove \r\nthe bandage. Many black long boots, a nice house, with lots of logistics. A \r\nyoung man who was in the place told them to behave well, that nothing would \r\nhappen to them, that he was also a captive. Pictures of all of them were \r\ntaken.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\"One \r\nmonth after, a man that they called \"commander\" got on the phone to ask for 500 \r\nmillion bolivars. Andr\u00e9s Eloy Blanco Fern\u00e1ndez, 26, kidnapped on December 1, \r\n2009, in the town of La Luz, Municipality of Bishops. The ransom was paid, but \r\nhe never reached home. His parents have made unsuccessful \r\nefforts.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According \r\nto an urban legend widespread in the area during those years, he had been thrown \r\nto Pepito, the caiman, a pet of one of the powerful construction unions at that \r\ntime. A protected witness gave a statement at the time, but then he retracted \r\nwhen he was threatened and blackmailed, and never again spoke of what happened. \r\nWhen he was interviewed for the first time, he even said \u2013newspaper clipping in \r\nhand- that the young man had been murdered. But there have never been \r\nsigns.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But \r\nsome kidnappings extend over time, like Pedro Antonio Zambrano\u2019s, which occurred \r\non September 9, 2006, when he was 42 years old, a producer, originally from the \r\ntown of the Municipality of Pedraza. As a certificate of life, they sent the \r\nmother a finger and then a video showing the missing tip.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nelson \r\nAl\u00ed S\u00e1nchez, who disappeared on December 25, 2009, was 38 years old. He was \r\nengaged in the sale of fish. Six hooded men with short weapons broke into his \r\nhome and took him away without saying a single word. He screamed not to take him \r\naway, that he had not done anything. The men arrived in a four-door truck, \r\ndouble cab, and small car.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His \r\nfather, Jacinto Gonz\u00e1lez, would come that day to talk with the neighbors and \r\ndetermine if there was something strange. \"Both they and I were surprised. Why \r\ndid that happen to him if he was a quiet man, coming from the river with the \r\nfish?\"<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They \r\nnever called Jacinto. The authorities remained silent. \"Our hope is that the \r\nsecurity forces bring my son alive or dead, even his bones. That\u2019s my \r\nhope.\"<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A \r\ncouple of years ago, Oscar Pineda said in an interview with the press that the \r\nColombian guerrillas would have at least five hostages who lived in Barinas when \r\nthey were kidnapped. Today, he reiterates it and asks to write down the case of \r\na young nurse from T\u00e1chira who had been in the hands of the guerrillas for \r\nseveral years. \"I only remember that her name is Mar\u00eda and her case has been \r\nreported by the state of Tachira media.\" Meanwhile, the days go by and the peace \r\nagreement, with its setbacks, is the flavor of the month in Colombia.
