The \r\nverification that the powdered milk included in the so-called \"CLAP boxes\" is \r\nfraudulent<\/A>, \r\nopens questions about the vendors and intermediaries selected by the Venezuelan \r\nauthorities and the controls that the authorities could apply on the imported \r\nproduct. But that inquiry must not overlook the origin of the merchandise, \r\nMexico. This country registers a dismal tradition of poor quality dairy products \r\nintended for its social programs. False information in the nutrition facts label \r\nand low supply of nutrients are part of a verifiable pattern both in the CLAP \r\nprogram of Nicol\u00e1s Maduro Government and in successive initiatives of the \r\nMexican Government.<\/p>\n\n\r\n\n

From \r\nas early as 2004, the Consumer Protection Federal Agency (Profeco), one of the \r\nfederal agencies in Mexico dealing with consumers\u2019 right, have been warning that \r\nsome brands of milk show problems in commercial information or bear misleading \r\nand deceptive legends. In 2006, through the Ministry of Economy, Profeco \r\nrevealed that 400 brands of dairy products cheated consumers by offering soy or \r\nrice drinks as milk. Already in 2008, the agency imposed large fines on more \r\nthan a hundred brands and banned the sale of four million \r\nproducts.<\/p>\n\n
